Ron Dayne, the New York Giants running back, did more than just play football. He excelled in track and field at Overbrook High School in Pine Hill, New Jersey.

Dayne won the New Jersey Meet of Champions in 1995 and also excelled in the discus. He broke the state record for discus and shot put in 1996. At 216′ 11′′, he holds the record for the fifth-longest discus throw by a high schooler.

Ron’s popularity increased when he enrolled at the University of Wisconsin at 270 pounds. Because of his weight and height, many questioned his ability to play tailback. Everything falls into place when something nice has to happen to you. Fortunately, Wisconsin football coach Barry Alvarez took a chance and forced Dayne to play tailback.

Dayne was a running back for all four of his outstanding years. He shone like a brilliant star during his freshman year, yet he never brags about his accomplishments. During his four years in college, Ron set marks that would propel him closer to breaking the NCAA Division I-A rushing record for total yards.

He gained 1863 yards as a freshman for the Wisconsin Badgers, 1421 yards as a sophomore, 1325 yards as a junior, and 1834 yards as a senior. Finally, in the final game of 1999 versus Iowa, he smashed all records. He rushed for a total of 6397 yards throughout his undergraduate career, propelling him to the greatest ranking in NCAA Division 1 history.

Dayne’s strongest performances came during Wisconsin’s bowl games. He also became the only player in Big Ten history to earn back-to-back Rose Bowl MVP awards. In addition, he earned the Heisman Trophy in 1999, which he believes to be his most important accomplishment.

Ron Dayne’s NFL career began when he was taken by the New York Giants in the NFL Draft in 2000. Tiki Barber, the speedy player, and Dayne, the big guy, made the inaugural season entertaining. The Giants then went on to play in Super Bowl XXXV.

Dayne committed to the New York Giants for five years and shed weight to improve his flexibility. He signed with the Denver Broncos after leaving the Giants, and his 98-yard touchdown run against the Dallas Cowboys won him the CBS Thanksgiving All-Iron Award.
