Bruno Schoenaerts, his elder half-brother, is a lawyer. Schoenaerts is of Flemish origin through his father, but his maternal grandmother is from Liège, Wallonia, Belgium’s French-speaking area, and he spent his first six years of life in Brussels with his maternal grandparents.

Professional Career of Matthias Schoenaerts

Schoenaerts made his cinematic debut at the age of 13 in the 1992 Belgian film Daens, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. His father appeared in the film, but they had no scenes together. Schoenaerts was designated one of “Europe’s Shooting Stars” by European Film Promotion in 2003.

He appeared in various short and feature films after graduating from Antwerp’s Academy of Dramatic Arts. In 2002, he appeared in Dorothée Van Den Berghe’s Meisje (Girl); in 2003, he appeared in Tom Barman’s Any Way the Wind Blows; in 2004, he appeared in Rudolf Mestdagh’s Ellektra, and in 2004, he produced Roel Mondelaers and Raf Reyntjens’ sci-fi short film A Message from Outer Space.

Similarly, he appeared in Ben van Lieshout’s De Muze and Erik Bruyn’s Nadine in 2007. He starred as Bob in Pieter van Hees’ horror thriller Left Bank in 2008, and most memorably as Filip in Erik Van Looy’s Loft, which became the most profitable Flemish film at the Belgian box office, with over $7,075,161.

In 2011, Schoenaerts starred as Jacky Vanmarsenille in Bullhead, directed by Michael R. Roskam and nominated for Best Foreign Language Oscar. His performance in the film got positive reviews and earned him the FIPRESCI Award for outstanding actor at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in January 2012.
