Gio Urshela began his professional baseball career with the Cleveland Indians in 2008. In 2009, he made his professional debut with the Dominican Summer League Indians and the Arizona League Indians.

Urshela began the 2014 season with Akron before being promoted to the Columbus Clippers of the Class AAA International League.

Following the 2014 campaign, Urshela was added to the Indians’ 40-man roster. He was the Indians’ fourth-best prospect in 2015 according to MLB.com.

Urshela was dealt to the New York Yankees on August 4, 2018, in exchange for monetary considerations. He was sent to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders by the Yankees. He worked with RailRiders hitting coach Phil Plantier to improve his batting posture. Urshela had a.307 batting average in 107 plate appearances for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
