Legendary Gary Rossington, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Guitarist and founding member Dies at 71
The only remaining original member of the Southern rock band “Lynyrd Skynyrd”, guitarist Gary Rossington, passed away on Sunday night at the age of 71, the group announced on their official Facebook page.
On March 5, the group expressed their sorrow and sympathies for the late iconic rapper in a Facebook update. He had a significant role in the band’s eventual revival after three of its members died in a plane disaster in 1977.
However, the reason for the death was not disclosed. The guitarist had battled a number of heart problems, including a heart attack in 2015 and an emergency heart surgery in 2021 during the band’s Big Wheels Keep on Turnin’ Tour.

It has been a big loss for the music industry and Lynyrd Skynyrd supporters and admirers that the only surviving iconic member of the band has passed away.
The group expressed their condolence to the Legendary Gary Rossington;
“It is with our deepest sympathy and sadness that we have to advise, that we lost our brother, friend, family member, songwriter, and guitarist, Gary Rossington, today,”
They added;
“Gary is now with his Skynyrd brothers and family in heaven and playing it pretty, like he always does.
The status continued;
Please keep Dale, Mary, Annie and the entire Rossington family in your prayers and respect the family’s privacy at this difficult time ?????? ”
In addition, On October 20, 1977, the Guitarist Lynyrd Skynyrd was the sole survivor of a plane crash near Gillsburg, Mississippi, in which the lead singer and founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Ronnie Van Zant, the guitarist and vocalist Steve Gaines, the backing vocalist Cassie Gaines (Steve’s older sister), the assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, Captain Walter McCreary, and First Officer William John Gray all perished. Fuel exhaustion brought on by the pilot’s miscalculation was the primary cause of the accident.

Likewise, The guitarist Lynyrd had to battle a number of heart problems during his lifetime. Lynyrd suffered a heart attack in October 2015 and had to undergo emergency heart surgery the following year in 2016. Three years later in 2019, Lynyrd had a heart valve repaired 2019.
Likewise, he has to receive emergency heart surgery in 2021; at the time he was scheduled to have a tour “band’s Big Wheels Keep on Turnin’ Tour.” The legend passed away barely five months before Lynyrd Skynyrd’s The Sharp Dressed Simple Man Tour was scheduled to launch on July 21.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is an American rock band that was formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1964 comprising comprised Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington, Allen Collins, Larry Junstrom, and Bob Burns. In 1973, the band’s first album, “Lynyrd Skynyrd” was released. The group was also nominated for CMT Music Award for CMT Performance of the Year. Sadly, as a result of the death of Gary Rossington, none of the founding members are with us today.
